Checklist "Ecological Sustainability in Culture" | Explanations

Function of the digital checklist

The checklist is intended to serve as an impetus to question one's own practices and make lasting changes. As a voluntary commitment, it determines the current status quo and is therefore purely an information tool. Applicants assess their current sustainable practices in the areas of internal organization, communication and networking, energy efficiency and buildings, energy supply, procurement, catering, waste and recycling, mobility, accommodation and tour planning, and climate change adaptation. The information provided is used to calculate a result that reflects the current status as a percentage.

To use the checklist:

Please fill out the checklist for ecological sustainability in culture and submit the PDF with your results with each funding application. It is sufficient to fill out the checklist once a year and attach it to all applications. You do not need any additional data such as a CO₂ balance sheet; you can usually answer the questions based on your experience. It takes about 10-20 minutes to fill out. The information has no bearing on funding decisions.

At the beginning, you will be asked to select a scenario. Please decide which scenario applies to you based on the following information. If you submit several applications per year, it is recommended that you select the higher scenario directly.

  • Scenario 1: For project funding with a total funding volume of less than €20,000, regardless of how many projects of this amount are applied for per year.
  • Scenario 2: For project funding with a total funding volume of more than €20,000 and/or institutional funding, regardless of how many projects of this amount are applied for in a year.
  • Scenario 3: For the permanent use of a property as owned or rented.

Creation of the "Ecological Sustainability Checklist" and Process Description

Under the leadership of the Stiftung Niedersachsen, Lower Saxony's largest cultural sponsors, together with two sustainability experts and two cultural associations, developed the Ecological Sustainability Checklist in 2023/24 in an agile process. The checklist covers all cultural sectors and addresses the different requirements of cultural actors.
The following institutions were involved in the process:
the Stiftung Niedersachsen (lead), together with two sustainability managers, the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture; the cities of Hanover, Oldenburg, Osnabrück, and Hildesheim; the Stiftung Kulturregion Hannover, the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung, the Braunschweigische Stiftung, the Klosterkammer Hannover, and the Hanover Region, as well as the Landesverband Soziokultur and the Museumsverband für Niedersachsen und Bremen.
Further information on the development of the checklist can be found on the Stiftung Niedersachsen website.
