#TakeAction | Semiprofessionelles Theater, Freilichtbühnen | 2nd Round
As part of NEUSTART KULTUR – the rescue and future package for the cultural and media sector financed by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM) – the Fonds Darstellende Künste launched the comprehensive #TakeThat package of funding measures back in October 2020. The aim of this package of measures was and is to preserve and stabilize the independent performing arts during the coronavirus pandemic.
Part of the #TakeThat program lines was the #TakeAction funding program, which was tailored to the needs and working realities of the diverse actors working in specific genres, focused on the work on new artistic productions under ever-changing pandemic-related conditions and challenges, and with a focus on flexible artistic production itself.
With the new edition of #TakeAction | Semi-Professional Ensembles and Open-Air Theaters, the Fonds Darstellende Künste once again funded open-format and open-ended work period grants for the development of productions and, where appropriate, presentations in the form of premieres until September 2022. This program was aimed specifically at the various production cycles that operate at the interface between amateur theater and professional independent performing arts: For example, amateur theaters that regularly work with professional independent performing artists or professional artists/groups that self-commission regular productions with amateurs.
What was funded?
The program funded artistic work and production cycles from the independent performing arts in the area of semi-professional ensembles and open-air theaters for one to two production periods.
Who could apply?
Eligible to apply were open-air theaters, amateur theater companies and associations that work with professional artists/groups in the independent performing arts as well as professional artists/groups themselves that work at the interface with amateur theater productions.
The prerequisite was that the group must be based in Germany and have its main focus of work there, as well as not receiving its main funding continuously from public sources.
How much could be applied for?
The minimum application amount was €8,000 and the maximum €25,000.
Co-financing or own resources/contributions amounting to at least 10% of the application sum had to be presented and proven for the relevant project at the time of application.
Application and funding deadlines
Applications could be submitted via the Fonds’ online application portal.
Application deadline:
- 01 November 2021
The possible project duration for approved projects in the second funding round began with the positive funding decision and ended on September 30, 2022.

A list of all funded projects in the second application round can be found here.
