#takecare Initiative (March 2020)

With the #takecare initiative in March 2020, the Fond Darstellende Künste reacted at short notice to the nationwide cancellations of performances, rehearsals and premieres in connection with measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic by adjusting its funding. With this first funding measure, the Fonds adjusted its initial funding and at first targeted independent artists affected by the loss of income whose projects had been funded by the Fonds over the past 10 years.

The Fonds Darstellende Künste initially provided a quarter of a million euros for this program and pleaded for an increase in the grant to the Fonds so that this support could also be made possible for performing arts artists who were not funded by the Fonds Darstellende Künste - but who were nevertheless active nationwide.

Theaterverlag donated €2,500 to the #takecare initiative of the Fonds Darstellende Künste to support projects by independent performing artists who were affected by a loss of income during the coronavirus crisis. With each new annual online subscription to Theater heute, Opernwelt, and Tanz, €50 was donated to the fund. As soon as more than 50 new subscriptions were taken out, the publisher again donated €2,500. In addition, there were other individual donations that helped to support the 100 projects. We would like to thank the donors Barbara Lambrecht-Schadeberg and Dr. Andreas Freisfeld for their support.

What was funded?

For the projects funded in #takecare, the artistic idea as well as the open-ended and production-independent engagement were central. With the help of a grant-like funding, content-explorative projects were emphasized, such as research to generate content and future concept development, as well as all activities aimed at stabilizing artistic activities, such as the post-project archiving of artistic activities, the reorientation of postponed projects and, if necessary, preparatory guest performance acquisition. Due to the measures to contain the pandemic, public productions, rehearsals and guest performance activities were not allowed. Any communication channels were to be established at a "physical distance", e.g., digitally, under the applicable contact rules.

Who could apply?

Those eligible to apply were artists who had worked artistically in a production supported by the Fonds over the last 10 years and could prove this by naming the funded production and their participation in the funded project(s).

How much could be applied for?

Applications could not include more than 10% material expenses and at least 90% had to be planned as professional fees. The maximum amount of the application was €5,000 and was also based on a verifiable loss of income. These could be proven by contracts, funding commitments, fixed plans and their cancellation by co-production partners, ensemble directors and other cancellation documentation.
