Invitation: Theaterpreis des Bundes 2026
On behalf of the Minister of State for Culture and Media, Wolfram Weimer, we cordially invite you to the presentation of the
Theaterpreis des Bundes 2026
on April 17, 2026, at 8:00 p.m.
at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele
With the Theaterpreis des Bundes, the Minister of State for Culture and Media honors outstanding theaters and production houses and their remarkable work throughout Germany. For the first time, all theaters in Germany were eligible to apply without exception.
The newly aligned Innovation Prize, which has been redesigned after ten years, is endowed with 200,000 euros. Three further awards of 100,000 euros each go to theaters in the categories of municipal, state, and regional theaters, private theaters and guest performance venues, and independent production venues.
The award ceremony on the evening of April 17 will take place for the first time in the immediate run-up to the Berlin Theatertreffen and will provide a special stage for the award-winning theaters selected by an independent jury of experts: With a lecture performance by Jonathan Meese, a solo by Dominique Horwitz, theatrical interludes by a top-class ensemble of actors, and musical contributions by “Causa Rynkowski” and the “Resident Music Collective” under the artistic direction of Ron Zimmering.
As part of the program, the Fonds Darstellende Künste will also award the Tabori Prize 2026, worth €100,000, the highest award in the independent performing arts in Germany. As the project sponsor, the Fonds Darstellende Künste is also responsible for organizing the award process and hosting the Theaterpreis des Bundes award ceremony.
