Prefiguring a Choreographic Milieu

Sabine Zahn, Alice Chauchat & Daniel Belasco Rogers

We must create support structures that will help us keep making and developing choreographic work in urban space for artists and audiences.

The central question the artists ask with "Prefiguring a Choreographic Milieu" is how can work that is concerned with movement research, urban site and an often intimate relation to audience become visible in a wider discourse? How can it communicate to multiple public, and how can it be sustainable as a resource for other practitioners?

The core team of Alice Chauchat, Ghyslaine Gau, Daniel Belasco Rogers and Sabine Zahn have been examining this question through their practice in multiple ways before NEUSTART KULTUR funding was available and afterward. The idea of 'prefiguring' a choreographic milieu is to start to practice what has already begun, namely to form a loose association of choreographers, dancers, performers and artists working with movement in public / urban space in order to exchange and support the work in multiple ways.

The first phase was to gather experiences and responses from a wider group of artists in a 4-day lab at the Floating University in Berlin. During the second working period, they will use their own artistic practices to test what structures support the work they are concerned with. By the end of the project, they will have a clear view of the field of body movement work in public / urban space in Berlin and what it takes to support it.
