Statistically, attendance at German-speaking theaters is clearly on the rise again. But: The audience is different. It seems to be less homogeneous; its interests have shifted. Participatory or immersive productions in small venues that used to be labeled "niche" are increasingly overrun, while premieres with prominent casts are not always sold out. Meanwhile, at other theaters, long-time theatergoers are having increasingly sensitive reactions to contemporary artistic approaches, and there is a vocal desire for the old familiars. Can we still speak of an "audience" – or has it long become necessary to use the plural?
In two panel discussions, artistic directors of small, medium and large theaters will come together to discuss audience narratives, visitor statistics and local experiences. Their observations and positions will be compared with the theses of the artistic-research labs and new strategies will be drafted together.
